Prof. Dr. Alois Stutzer is a Professor of Political Economy at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, University of Basel, where he leads the Chair of Political Economy. He is also the Director of the Center for Research in Economics and Well-Being (CREW) and holds research fellowships at IZA and CREMA.
His research lies at the intersection of economics, political science, and psychology, with a strong focus on political institutions, well-being, democracy, and behavioral economics. He investigates how institutional frameworks shape political behavior, citizen well-being, and social outcomes, including topics such as political selection, media influence on interest groups, immigrant integration, and emotional determinants of voting.
His recent publications reflect a consistent interdisciplinary trend, combining empirical economic analysis with insights from psychology and political theory to understand the mechanisms behind individual and collective decision-making. These works frequently explore how institutional design affects life satisfaction, governance quality, and social cohesion.

Prof. Stutzer actively supervises students and contributes to academic discourse through his role in major research networks. He has been a former principal investigator in the NCCR – The Migration-Mobility Nexus and continues to lead impactful research projects on well-being and institutional economics. His work is supported by affiliations with leading economic research centers, and he plays a key role in promoting interdisciplinary research through CREW.
He is affiliated with the Political Economy Research Group and contributes to the academic community through editorial and collaborative research activities.
