Ally Ackbarally is a Senior Lecturer in Perioperative Care at De Montfort University, within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and the School of Nursing and Midwifery. He is an experienced Perioperative Care Practitioner and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Critical Care Specialist with over 25 years of clinical experience across the NHS and independent healthcare sectors. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and actively contributes to the development of perioperative roles through the Healthcare Knowledge Exchange.
His research focuses on patient safety, human factors, and perioperative practice, particularly examining the role of Surgical First Assistants. He employs innovative pedagogical methods such as live simulation and classroom engagement to enhance learning. His expertise spans surgical care, anaesthetics, post-surgical recovery, anatomy and physiology, and the application of non-technical skills in clinical settings.
Ally has co-published Human Factors for Healthcare: A Guide for Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (2024) and authored a book chapter in Surgical First Assistant, the Essentials of Practice (2025). His work reflects a strong commitment to improving surgical outcomes through human factors integration and education.

He is actively involved in teaching and research, with a current HEIF-funded project on Simulation and Human Factors (PSIRF). He is also affiliated with the Leicester Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation for Integrated Care (LIPIIC).
