Allison Pease is the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. She holds the rank of Professor of English and has served in multiple leadership roles, including Associate Provost, Chair of English, and Director of Gender Studies. Her academic background includes a PhD and MA from New York University and a BA from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Dr. Pease’s research focuses on modernist literature and culture (1890-1945), exploring how marginalized perspectives challenge mainstream values through studies of pornography, women’s boredom, and gender/sexuality theories. She is the author of Modernism, Mass Culture, and the Aesthetics of Obscenity (2000), Modernism, Feminism, and the Culture of Boredom (2012), and co-author of Modernism, Sex, and Gender (2018).
Her administrative leadership includes creating the English and Gender Studies B.A. programs, establishing the Teaching and Learning Center, and co-authoring the 2019 Vision for Undergraduate Student Success. She co-hosts the Framework for Culturally Affirming Curriculum podcast and leads John Jay’s Middle States reaccreditation process.
Pease teaches courses ranging from modernist literature to gender studies, including interdisciplinary topics like race, ethnicity, and memory. Her work emphasizes cultural responsiveness and anti-racist pedagogy, as seen in the Seven Principles for a Culturally Responsive Curriculum.
