Allison Hubel is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, where she leads the Hubel Research Group. She is also the Principal Investigator at the Biopreservation Core Resource (BioCoR) and co-founder of Evia Bio, a startup commercializing biopreservation technologies. Her research focuses on advancing cryopreservation methods, particularly DMSO-free solutions, through molecular mechanisms of damage stabilization, low-temperature imaging, and automation.
- Academic Affiliation: Professor, Mechanical Engineering, University of Minnesota
- Leadership Roles: President of Society for Cryobiology, Director of BioCoR
- Commercialization: Co-founder of Evia Bio
Her work explores the use of osmolytes and Natural Deep Eutectic Systems (NADES) to stabilize cells and tissues during freezing, leveraging techniques like low-temperature Raman spectroscopy and Differential Evolution for protocol optimization. She has pioneered hands-on training courses in cryopreservation and integrates robotics into high-throughput preservation processes.
Scientific Awards:
- President of the Society for Cryobiology (2023)
Allison advises PhD candidates such as Adam Joules, Troy Louwagie, and Akshat Mallya, and her lab facilities include controlled-rate freezers, liquid nitrogen storage, and advanced imaging systems through BioCoR and ATP-Bio.
