Allison Curseen is the Cooney Family Assistant Professor of English at Boston College, located in Chestnut Hill, MA. She specializes in African American and 19th-century American literature and culture, with particular interests in performance studies, child studies, and theories of fugitivity and unruliness. Her current research examines depictions of childish physical movements in relation to historical legal contexts like the Fugitive Slave Act and antitruancy laws.
Curseen holds a B.A. from Oberlin College, an M.F.A. from American University, and a Ph.D. from Duke University. Her recent work appears in Saving the World: Girlhood and Evangelicalism in the Nineteenth Century (Routledge, 2017). She has also contributed a theater review to the webzine Not That But This.
Her scholarly focus bridges literary analysis with cultural and historical frameworks, addressing intersections of race, movement, and national identity. She is affiliated with the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences and contributes to undergraduate and graduate programs in the English Department.
