Allen Mills is a retired full professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Winnipeg. He specializes in Canadian political history, socialism, and Eastern European politics. His research includes studies on J.S. Woodsworth, Pierre Trudeau, and post-communist transitions. He has held leadership roles, including Department Chair (2000–2005, 2014–2016) and editor of government and politics entries for the Encyclopedia of Manitoba (2004–2007).
Education: BA Hons (Trinity College, Dublin University, 1967), MA (York University, 1968), PhD (University of Western Ontario, 1976). His PhD thesis was on 'The Forum and Canadian socialism, 1920–1934.'
Research interests span Canadian socialism and liberalism, Trudeau's intellectual biography, and Charles Taylor’s political thought. He has authored influential books like Fool for Christ (1991) and Citizen Trudeau (2016).
He has held visiting roles at Edinburgh University (1992) and Charles University, Prague (1992). His work bridges Canadian and international political thought, with a focus on ideological movements and their socio-political impacts.
