Allan Hughes is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Northumbria University and Programme Leader for the BA Hons Fine Art programme. He holds a PhD in Fine Art from the University of Ulster (2006), focusing on audiovisual installation and parafictional narratives. His research explores remediated histories through post-produced audiovisual works, collaborating with groups like Blue Mountain Arcturus (a fictional games research collective) and NEUSCHLOSS (an academic art collaborative).
His key research interests include parafictional storytelling, collaborative art practices, and the intersection of technology with contemporary art. Notable projects include Polymorph Other (exhibited in London and Hexham) and Citadel of Chaos, which experiments with alternate present materializations.
Publications focus on interdisciplinary art practices, with recent outputs exploring table-top utopias and digital narratives. He supervises postgraduate research students examining themes like art and identity in India, and shared collaborative practices. Hughes actively engages with institutional critique through projects like reinterpreting David Dye’s Tattoo artwork and pedagogic interventions within institutional spaces.
His work is exhibited internationally and aligns with Northumbria’s research themes in contemporary art and curatorial innovation.
