Allan Boughey is a Lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University's School of Arts and Creative Industries. He has a 20-year background in journalism, including roles as a newspaper/digital journalist, magazine editor, and PR account manager. Additionally, he served as a Magistrate on the Teesside bench from 2007 to 2012. His interdisciplinary research focuses on media history, cultural intermediaries, and the intersections of art and music.
Education & Professional Background
Allan’s career spans journalism, academia, and legal roles. Before academia, he worked in PR and edited magazines. His teaching began at Teesside University’s Business School and School of Arts.
Research Interests
Allan explores media representation in historical contexts (e.g., Victorian barmaids’ labor struggles) and modern cultural phenomena like Björk’s MoMA exhibition. He is affiliated with the Centre for Creative Practice Research and Scottish Centre for the Book.
Advising & Grants
He co-supervised Luke Langlands’ MRes on cultural intermediaries in the British music press (2013–2017). He led a Scottish Funding Council-funded project (2012–2013) to develop a new business model for an independent Scottish online newspaper.
