Dr. Alistair Ford is a Senior Lecturer in Geospatial Data Analytics and School X Climate Fellow at Newcastle University's School of Engineering. He joined the university in 1998 as an undergraduate in Geographic Information Science and has since specialized in geospatial tools for climate change adaptation. His research focuses on developing spatial models to assess climate impacts on urban systems, transport networks, and socio-economic dynamics. Ford leads modules like CEG1702 (Geographic Information Systems) and CEG3717 (Applied Geospatial Data Handling), integrating teaching with cutting-edge research.
He holds a 1st Class Honours degree (2001) and a PhD in Geospatial Engineering (2019). His career includes roles such as Research Associate on EU FP7's RAMSES project and Tyndall Centre Fellow, advancing decision-support tools for climate adaptation. Key projects include the ARCADIA initiative examining railway resilience to extreme temperatures and the Alan Turing Institute's Strategic Digital Twins for sustainable urban planning in UK regions like the Northern Powerhouse.
His research spans geospatial modeling of climate hazards (e.g., heatwaves, flooding), urban infrastructure resilience, and interdisciplinary collaboration with NGOs and city decision-makers. Notable outputs include frameworks for integrated spatial assessment and tools like the EARWIG weather generator. Ford has supervised multiple PhD students and contributed to international conferences and public engagement initiatives like the COP26 exhibition.
Teaching and outreach activities include CPD courses for government/industry and chairing 'Science Speakeasy' sessions at the Life Science Centre. His work emphasizes open-source tools and collaborative approaches to address urban climate challenges.
