Alissa Packer is an Associate Professor of Biology at Susquehanna University, where she serves as Speaker of the Faculty and Department Head of Biology. She teaches courses including Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, General Ecology, Plant Physiology, and Plant-Animal Interactions, while also directing the Common Reading Program and contributing to the Committee on Teaching and Learning.
- PhD from Indiana University
- Bachelor's degree from Dickinson College
Her research focuses on plant defense mechanisms, particularly the role of extrafloral nectaries and hydrogen cyanide in protecting plants against herbivores. She investigates whether these defenses are upregulated after plant damage and examines plant-soil biota interactions influencing species distribution. Her recent work spans plant-insect dynamics, soil pathogen effects on temperate trees, and science education innovations.
Packer's publications highlight interdisciplinary trends in plant ecology, defense physiology, and pedagogy. Notable works include studies on induced defenses in sweet cherry (Prunus avium) and the ecological impacts of Prunus serotina in native and invasive ranges. She also explores service learning applications in non-majors biology courses.
Active in professional societies such as the Ecological Society of America and the National Science Teachers Association, Packer bridges research and teaching through field studies and curriculum development.
