Dr Alison Pooler is a Reader in Health Professional Education and Director of the Physician Associate programmes (Masters and Apprenticeship) at Keele University's School of Medicine. She transitioned from clinical practice in nursing and respiratory medicine to academia in 2006, designing nationally recognized curricula in non-medical prescribing and leading the development of Keele's Physician Associate program. Her roles include membership in the GMC working group for the MAP national curriculum and leadership in the PA Schools Council.
Education: PhD, MSc(Health), BSc(Hons) Nursing (Edinburgh University), PGCHPE, SFHEA.
Research Interests: Respiratory medicine (asthma/COPD), psychological aspects of chronic disease management, interprofessional education, and neurodivergent student support. She investigates patient-centered care in wound management and clinical training innovations like gamified interprofessional education.
Awards: Runner-up in the RCN Akinsanya Award (2008) and nominated for Best PhD Supervisor of the year (2019).
Leadership & Committees: Deputy chair of the PA Schools Council, Education subcommittee chair, and active contributor to NHS and GMC initiatives. Previously reviewed non-medical prescribing programs for the NMC.
Doctoral Supervision: Supports PhD students in healthcare education and has led the FMHS professional doctorate program.
Labs/Teams: Central to Keele's Clinical Education Centre and Physician Associate program development, integrating clinical and academic expertise.
