Prof. Alireza Khaligh is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Director of the Maryland Power Electronics Laboratory (MPEL) at the University of Maryland, College Park. He holds affiliations with the Institute for Systems Research (ISR) and the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute. Prior to UMD, he was an Assistant Professor at Illinois Institute of Technology and a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
His research focuses on power electronics for transportation electrification, renewable energy systems, and energy harvesting. Key projects include high-efficiency EV chargers, solar PV converters for space applications, and ultra-light interfaces for micro-robotics. He has authored/co-authored over 210 journal/conference papers and two books: Energy Harvesting: Solar, Wind, and Ocean Energy Conversion Systems and Integrated Power Electronics Converters and Digital Control.
Notable awards include the 2022 IEEE Power Electronics Society Achievement Award, 6th Nagamori Award, and multiple Best Paper Awards from IEEE societies. He serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification and has organized major conferences like APEC 2016 and ITEC 2013.
His lab, MPEL, develops innovative solutions for electric vehicles, data centers, and more electric aircrafts. Recent milestones include a 450kHz GaN-based DC-DC converter for data centers (95% efficiency) and a pyroelectric energy harvesting system with EMI-filtered outputs. He advises over 15 graduate students and collaborates with industry partners like Genovation Cars and the U.S. Army Research Lab.
