Alireza Afshari is a Professor and Research Group Leader at Aalborg University's Department of Construction, Urban and Environmental Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and Science. He leads the Research Group for Indoor Climate Quality and Building Systems and is affiliated with AAU Arctic. His work focuses on building technology, indoor climate, and sustainable energy systems for buildings.
Professor Afshari's research interests center around indoor climate, ventilation systems, energy efficiency in buildings, and sustainable building technologies. His work spans from fundamental building physics to practical implementation of energy-saving solutions in existing and new buildings. He has made significant contributions to understanding ventilation requirements, indoor air quality impacts on health, and the integration of renewable energy systems in buildings.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on practical applications of building science, with particular emphasis on ventilation solutions for existing buildings, thermal energy storage systems, and the health impacts of indoor environments. His work bridges the gap between theoretical building physics and real-world implementation challenges, often addressing the specific needs of the Nordic climate and building stock.
Professor Afshari actively contributes to research projects addressing current challenges in building sustainability, including the Green Ventilation Catalog project for existing apartment buildings, geothermal energy systems, and indirect evaporative cooling solutions. His work has significant practical implications for building standards and energy policies.
He serves as an editor for prominent journals including Sustainability and Energies, and has organized academic events such as the PhD course on Advanced Controllers for Building Systems. His research group collaborates with institutions across multiple countries, reflecting the international nature of building science challenges.
