Alice Louise Bean is the University Distinguished Professor of Physics at the University of Kansas since 1993. Her primary affiliation is with the CMS Collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider, focusing on experimental particle physics with expertise in silicon detector design and calibration. She pioneered the Quarked! science education project, promoting particle physics outreach to children and the public through multimedia resources.
Her research interests include supersymmetry (STOP particles), t' vector-like quark searches, and development of tracking detectors for high-energy physics experiments. She actively contributes to both experimental analysis and detector construction within the CMS experiment.
Bean's service roles include a Jefferson Science Fellowship (2014-2015) advising the U.S. Department of State on climate change and religion policy. She serves on NSF, DOE, and journal review panels, and leads initiatives to increase women's participation in physics. Her work balances cutting-edge research with impactful science communication and educational outreach.
