Alice Kaltenberger

Alice Kaltenberger is a Privatdozent (Associate Professor) at the University of Innsbruck's Institute of Archaeology, holding teaching appointments at the Universities of Innsbruck, Vienna, and Salzburg. She serves as Deputy Director for Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI) excavations at Carnuntum (Lower Austria), Mondsee Castle and Feldkirchen (Upper Austria), and St. Peter's Archabbey (Salzburg), while freelancing for the Upper Austrian State Museum, Salzburg Museum, Vienna City Archaeology Department, and Austrian Archaeological Institute.

She earned her doctorate in philology from the University of Vienna after studying Classical Archaeology, Ancient History, Classical Studies, and Art History, completing her habilitation at the University of Innsbruck with venia legendi in Roman, medieval, and modern archaeology.

Her research centers on contextual analysis of archaeological finds from Roman to modern eras, emphasizing historical, art-historical, and cultural-historical frameworks. She conducts comprehensive studies on Austrian tiles and tiled stoves, examining manufacturing techniques through interactions with contemporary art, socio-historical contexts, and artisanal perspectives, supported by extensive photographic documentation. Additional focus includes transcription and publication of historical sources and archival materials.

Dr. Kaltenberger reviews completed dissertations and master's theses, leads Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and Austrian National Library (ÖNB) research projects, and curates exhibitions. She lectures for specialized courses including the University of Innsbruck's 'Restoration of Historic Tiled Stoves' program.
