Alfredo Paternoster is a Full Professor of Philosophy and Theory of Language at the University of Bergamo, where he has served as Director of the Department of Humanities, Philosophy, and Communication since July 1, 2022. He is affiliated with the FINO doctoral program (consortium: Genoa, Pavia, Eastern Piedmont, Turin) and the Doctoral Program in Transcultural Humanities at Bergamo.
His research focuses on core topics in analytic philosophy of language and mind, including theories of concepts, perception, and consciousness; cognitive semantics; mental simulation; and the epistemological foundations of cognitive science. He has authored or co-authored seven influential books, such as The Self and Its Defenses (2017) and Understanding Language (2020), which bridge theoretical philosophy with empirical cognitive science.
While his publications span 2019–2023, they reveal a sustained emphasis on reconciling traditional philosophical analysis with modern cognitive science, particularly through debates about psychologism, anti-representationalism, and the neural basis of linguistic understanding. His work engages interdisciplinary frameworks, including simulation theories and amodal representation models.
