Alfred Wierzbicki is a Professor in the Department of Ethics at the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Poland. He maintains active consultation hours for the Summer semester 2024/25 at pl. M. Curie-Skłodowskiej 4/p. 312 in Lublin.
His academic background includes theological studies at the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) from 1976-1982, philosophical studies at KUL from 1983-1986, and doctoral studies at the International Academy of Philosophy in Liechtenstein from 1986-1991. He earned his doctorate in 1991 with a dissertation on 'Personalistyczne podstawy zasady non-violence' under Professor Rocco Buttiglione, and completed his habilitation in 2006 with a thesis on 'Filozofia a totalitaryzm. Augusta Del Nocego interpretacja kryzysu moderny'.
Wierzbicki's research spans ethics, philosophy, theology, and Catholic thought, with particular focus on totalitarianism, personalism, and the intersection of faith and reason. His work demonstrates strong engagement with both academic philosophy and practical ethical applications in contemporary society. He has published extensively including over 150 scientific works, 6 authored books, and has edited numerous publications.
Among his notable recognitions are the Anna Kamieńska Award for 'Kogut z Akwilei' (1999) and the Józef Czechowicz Award for 'Znaki szczególne' (2000), highlighting his contributions to both academic and literary fields.
Professionally, he has held significant positions including Deputy Director of the John Paul II Institute at KUL since 1998, serving as Director from 2006-2014, and Editor-in-Chief of the quarterly 'Ethos'. He has also lectured internationally at institutions including the Papal Lateran University in Rome, the University of Parma, the University of Sassari, the Catholic University of Chile, and St. Thomas University in the USA.
Wierzbicki maintains an active presence beyond academia as an ordained Catholic priest (since 1982) with various church-related roles including Director of the Catholic-Jewish Dialogue Center in the Lublin Archdiocese and involvement in multiple cultural and educational initiatives.
