Professor Alfred Krabbe serves as Professor for Aircraft Astronomy and Extraterrestrial Space Missions at the University of Stuttgart's Institute of Space Systems (Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and Geodesy), where he has been a W3 Professor since 2009. He is also the Head of the German SOFIA Institute (DSI), which coordinates Germany's participation in the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), a joint project between DLR and NASA.
Professor Krabbe's research spans observational and experimental astrophysics with a focus on infrared astronomy. His primary research interests include:
- Evolution of active galaxies and their centers
- Interaction of the black hole in the center of our Milky Way with its surroundings
- Exoplanets research
- Development of instruments for infrared spectroscopy
- Infrared optics and sensor technology
His work has significant implications for understanding cosmic phenomena through advanced airborne observatory platforms. Professor Krabbe has been instrumental in developing numerous astronomical instruments including FIFI-LS for SOFIA, OSIRIS for the Keck telescope, and several earlier instruments like LISA and MANIAC.
Throughout his career, Professor Krabbe has maintained strong connections with major astronomical institutions worldwide. He serves or has served on numerous science steering committees and has held leadership positions in international collaborations. His technical expertise in infrared instrumentation has made him a key figure in advancing airborne astronomy capabilities.
