Alfonso Pezzella is a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health and Director of Programmes for Mental Health and Step Up to Social Work at Middlesex University. He leads the MSc Mental Health Studies and MSc Advanced Clinical Practice programmes within the Department of Mental Health & Social Work, School of Health and Education. His research focuses on culturally competent healthcare, LGBT+ inclusion, and mental health advocacy.
He chairs the International Sexuality and Social Work Association and serves as Secretary of the European Transcultural Nursing Association. Pezzella coordinates the EU-funded IENE-LGBT project, developing educational tools for healthcare professionals on LGBT+ issues. His external roles include EU Horizon 2020 grant reviewing and external examining at University College London.
Teaching interests span LGBT+ identities, cultural competence, research methods, and psychology. He emphasizes compassionate, evidence-based practice in social work and nursing education. Recent projects address migrant/refugee parenting challenges and LGBT+ aged care training across Europe.
Pezzella's work bridges clinical practice, education, and policy, aiming to advance healthcare equity through inclusive curricula and professional development. He actively engages with academic communities via conferences, publications, and social media (@AlfPezzella).
