Alfonso H W Ngan

Professor Alfonso H W Ngan holds the 125th Anniversary Chair at the University of Birmingham and is a Royal Society Wolfson Fellow. He specializes in metallurgy and materials science, with a focus on stimuli-responsive materials and nanomechanics. His academic journey includes a BEng from the University of Hong Kong (1989) and a PhD from the University of Birmingham (1992), followed by postdoctoral work at Oxford University.

• Novel stimuli-responsive materials for actuation
• Modelling material defects and dislocation dynamics
• Viscoelastic effects in soft material characterization
• Stochastic deformation in micron-scale crystals

He advises on Hong Kong’s Water Supplies Department and serves as Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers’ Accreditation Board. Currently recruiting PhD students in smart materials and dislocation plasticity.
