Alfonso Garcia Marques

Alfonso García Marqués (b. 1954) is a Full Professor of Metaphysics at the University of Murcia's Faculty of Philosophy, where he has taught since 1987. He founded and directs the Nóesis Research Group, moderates the Philosophical Research Seminar and Latine Humanitas Seminar, and coordinates Erasmus Philosophy Programs with Italy. He obtained his PhD from the University of Navarra in 1980 with a thesis on Averroes' influence on Aquinas' metaphysics.

His research focuses on systematic metaphysics with historical depth, specializing in Aristotelian ontology, medieval philosophy (particularly Aquinas and Averroes), phenomenological traditions, and the works of Giambattista Vico. His approach combines rigorous analytical precision with historical contextualization, examining fundamental questions of being, essence, and rationality across philosophical epochs.

Professor Marqués has supervised doctoral theses on diverse philosophical topics including Zubiri's anthropology, Rorty's metaphysics, and aesthetics in symphonic music. He maintains active scholarly engagement through international conferences and research stays at institutions in Rome, Munich, Münster, and Vienna.
