Alexis Palma is a Professor at the University of Borås, working within the Academy of Textiles, Technology and Economics, specifically in the Department of Business Administration and Textile Management. As Program Manager for the Master of Business Administration Program and Business Administration Education, Palma plays a pivotal role in business education at the institution.
Palma completed undergraduate studies in economic history, statistics, mathematics and economics at the University of Gothenburg. Accepted into the doctoral program in economics there in fall 2001, Palma specialized in macroeconomics and development economics, earning a Licentiate degree in 2006 and defending a doctoral thesis on income distribution in Latin America in 2008.
Palma's research centers on income distribution between individuals and societal groups, examining how education, labor market status, economic activity, and transfers affect income patterns. Since working at the Department of Social Medicine at the University of Gothenburg until December 2011, Palma has expanded into health economics, investigating how socioeconomic factors influence individual health status and the relationship between economic variables and population health.
Palma's scholarly work demonstrates consistent methodological rigor in analyzing income inequality, particularly in Chilean and Latin American contexts. The publications reveal an evolution from theoretical economic analysis toward practical applications in policy and education, with recent work focusing on statistical teaching methods alongside continued economic research.
As an educator, Palma has developed and taught health economics courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, initially at the University of Gothenburg for public health and pharmacy programs, and later at the University of Borås. Palma also teaches microeconomics to business administration students and methods courses to administration program students, in addition to developing statistics curricula.
