Dr. Alexandros Georgios Sotiropoulos is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Crop Health, University of Southern Queensland. He holds an MSc from the University of Manchester and a PhD from the University of Zurich. His research focuses on bioinformatics-driven investigations of plant-microbe interactions, fungal genomics, and evolutionary genetics in agricultural systems.
Key research interests include genomic analyses of plant pathogens (particularly wheat powdery mildew), host-pathogen co-evolutionary dynamics, and molecular mechanisms underlying disease resistance. His work integrates cutting-edge genomic technologies with ecological and evolutionary perspectives to address challenges in crop health and sustainable agriculture.
Recent publications highlight studies on fungal pathogen genomics, avirulence gene evolution, and the application of bioinformatics tools for understanding pathogen population structures and host immunity mechanisms. Notable projects include global genomic analyses of wheat powdery mildew linking pathogen spread to human migration patterns, and investigations into the genetic basis of host resistance genes.
