Alexandros Gazos is a Researcher at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), working within the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) in the Research Group 'Sociotechnical Futures and Policies.' His academic work bridges sociology, technology assessment, and security studies, with a focus on understanding how sociotechnical systems can be made more resilient against emerging threats.
Gazos holds an MA in Sociology from Goethe University Frankfurt (2017-2020), where he also served as a Tutor at the Chair of 'Sociology and Social Psychology with a Focus on Interpretive Empirical Social Research' (2019-2020). Prior to this, he completed his BA in Sociology at the same institution (2012-2017). His academic background provides a strong foundation for his sociomaterial approach to technology studies.
Gazos's research interests include:
- Sociology of technology and its societal implications
- Critical infrastructure systems and their resilience
- Systemic risks associated with emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence
- Malevolent creativity and the dual-use potential of new technologies
- Technology monitoring in the context of extremism and radicalization
- Sociomaterial constitution of cybersecurity in critical information infrastructures
His publication record from 2021-2025 shows a clear progression toward increasingly sophisticated analyses of AI safety, critical infrastructure protection, and the intersection of technology with security concerns. His work demonstrates particular expertise in identifying structural vulnerabilities in AI-enhanced socio-technical systems and developing resilience strategies that account for both technical and social dimensions.
Gazos is actively engaged in several major research projects:
- Systemic Risks of Artificial Intelligence
- MOTRA-TM project – Technology Monitoring within the joint project 'Monitoring System and Transfer Platform Radicalization'
- AI-supported Microgrids: Vulnerabilities to Terrorism
His dissertation, 'Sociotechnical Resilience: A Response to the Vulnerabilities of Critical Information Infrastructures Online,' establishes the theoretical framework for much of his current work, emphasizing how resilience must be understood as an ongoing sociotechnical process rather than a static state of security.
