Alexandre Martin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University, within the School of Mathematical & Computer Sciences. He specializes in geometric group theory, focusing on the algebraic and geometric structure of Artin and Coxeter groups through their actions on nonpositively curved spaces. His roles include Year 3 Coordinator and Student-Staff Liaison Convenor for the Mathematics Department, and he co-leads the North British Geometric Group Theory network with Laura Ciobanu. He serves as an editor for the Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society.
Education:
- Bachelor’s/Master’s: École Normale Supérieure (Paris), 2006–2010
- PhD: University of Strasbourg (France), 2010–2013
Research interests include hyperbolicity, geometric structures, and the interplay between algebraic properties of groups and their geometric representations. His work often explores CAT(0) spaces, hierarchical hyperbolicity, and residual finiteness in mapping class groups.
Notable grants include an EPSRC New Investigator Award (2019–2022) for studying the Geometry of Artin Group Actions. His research outputs (22+ articles) span topics like acylindrical hyperbolicity, large-type Artin groups, and applications of combinatorial topology.
Professional activities include organizing conferences on geometric group theory and mentoring early-career researchers through collaborative networks.
