Alexandre Freire is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), where he has held a faculty position since 1991. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Princeton University in 1988 under the mentorship of Shing-Tung Yau. Prior to UTK, he was a Szegö Assistant Professor at Stanford University (1988–1991). His research focuses on Differential Geometry, Geometric Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, and Geometric Flows. He has held visiting positions at institutions including Warwick University, ETH Zurich, and the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics. At UTK, he served on the Faculty Senate (2014–2017) and currently chairs the Graduate Admissions and Assistantships Committee and the Graduate Committee. He has advised two Master’s and two Ph.D. theses.
His research interests include geometric flows (e.g., Ricci flow, mean curvature flow), analysis on manifolds, and applications of geometric analysis to problems in mathematical physics. Notable contributions include work on mass-capacity inequalities and geometric evolution equations with boundary conditions. His teaching includes advanced courses such as Modern Topology and Topics in Geometric Analysis, emphasizing rigorous theoretical frameworks and contemporary research topics.
