Alexandre Bernardino is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon. He is a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-Lisboa) and Deputy Director of the Computer and Robot Vision Lab at ISR. He also coordinates the Robotics and Automation Thematic Line at LARSyS, a national laboratory for robotics and engineering systems.
He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from IST in 2004. His research focuses on applying computer vision, machine learning, cognitive science, and control theory to advanced robotics and automation systems. Key areas include robot vision, humanoid robots, and cognitive systems.
A Senior Member of the IEEE, he chaired the IEEE Portugal Robotics and Automation Chapter (2015–2019) and is part of ELLIS (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems). His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches to robotics and autonomous systems.
He actively contributes to academic communities through editorial roles and open-source projects, such as sample code repositories for courses like SCDTR at IST. His affiliations include ISR, LARSyS, and collaborations via GitHub for educational and research purposes.
