Alexandra Kravchenko

Alexandra Kravchenko is a Professor in the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences at Michigan State University (MSU), affiliated with the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. Her research focuses on soil spatial variability across micro-aggregates to landscapes, employing statistical and geostatistical methods to study biogeochemical processes in soils. She leads the Kravchenko Lab, dedicated to advancing understanding of soil carbon cycling, greenhouse gas emissions, and land-use impacts.

Dr. Kravchenko holds a B.S. in Soil Physics from Moscow State University (Russia) and a Ph.D. from the University of Wyoming. She teaches advanced statistical courses like STT 464 and STT 814, bridging biological applications with quantitative methods.

Her research interests emphasize soil pore structure’s role in carbon sequestration, spatial variability of soil properties, and agricultural management effects on greenhouse gas emissions. Recent work highlights microbial spatial footprints and soil-atmosphere gas exchange mechanisms. Her studies integrate field experiments with computational modeling to address climate mitigation strategies and sustainable farming practices.

Notable achievements include a $750K NSF grant (2024) to study switchgrass for climate change mitigation and a 2020 recognition for outstanding contributions to soil physics. Dr. Kravchenko advises students such as Kyungmin 'Alyssa' Kim (2021 Truog Dissertation Award winner) and has supervised research on residue-driven carbon dynamics and nitrogen cycling.
