Professor Alexandra Harrington holds dual roles at Durham University: Professor in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures and Deputy Executive Dean (People & Culture) in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Her research focuses on modern Russian poetry, particularly Anna Akhmatova, exploring themes such as literary canonicity, Soviet-era celebrity dynamics, and the visual dimensions of poetry. She has authored a monograph, The Poetry of Anna Akhmatova: Living in Different Mirrors, supported by an AHRC Research Leave award. Current projects include studies on Russian literary celebrity and the visual aspects of poetry across centuries.
Her work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, examining Akhmatova’s intertextual connections with Dostoevsky and Mandelstam, as well as the relationship between poetry and silent cinema. She has contributed to AHRC-funded initiatives on Russian poetry canonicity and collaborated with the Authors and the World research hub at Lancaster University. Her research bridges literary analysis with cultural studies, addressing transnational authorship and the challenges of writing under oppressive regimes.
Awards include the AHRC Research Leave award, recognizing her monograph’s groundbreaking contribution. She actively engages in institutional leadership and academic community-building, reflecting her dual commitment to scholarship and university governance.
