Alexandra Bitušíková

Professor Alexandra Bitušíková is a prominent urban anthropologist at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, with expertise in cultural and social diversity, post-socialist transformation processes, cultural heritage, gender studies, and anthropology of higher education. She holds a PhDr. (1984), CSc. (1998), and doc. (2011) degrees, having completed her university education in ethnography at the Faculty of Arts, Comenius University, Bratislava (1983). Her career spans over three decades with significant contributions to both Slovak and international academic communities.

Bitušíková's research interests center on urban anthropology and the complex dynamics of cultural and social diversity in post-socialist contexts. She has conducted extensive research on urban transformation processes, examining how cities adapt to globalization while maintaining cultural heritage. Her gender studies work has particularly focused on women's roles in civic and political life in Slovakia. In the field of higher education anthropology, she has contributed significantly to understanding doctoral education reforms across Europe, having served as a Senior Adviser for the European University Association's Council for Doctoral Education since 2008.

Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on urban activism in Central and Eastern Europe, sustainable diversity in urban settings, and the theoretical frameworks for understanding regionalism. Bitušíková's work demonstrates a consistent interdisciplinary approach, bridging anthropology with sociology, urban studies, and gender studies. She has been particularly active in examining how post-socialist cities navigate the tensions between global influences and local identities.

Professor Bitušíková has been deeply involved in numerous international research projects and has served as Slovakia's national delegate for Horizon 2020 EU in socio-economic and humanities sciences since 2013. Her leadership extends to editorial roles for journals including Urban People (Charles University Prague) and Gender, rovné příležitosti, výzkum (Sociological Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences). She has held visiting positions at prestigious institutions including Cambridge University, University College London, and Boston University through a Fulbright Scholarship.
