Alexander V. Stehn is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). His research focuses on Latin American Philosophy, American Pragmatism, and Philosophy of the Americas, with particular emphasis on Mexican and Mexican-American thought, including Gloria Anzaldúa's works. He holds a PhD from Pennsylvania State University.
Stehn's teaching emphasizes pedagogical innovation, such as his 'American Philosophy and Self-Culture' course, which challenges traditional philosophical canons by centering figures like Benjamin Franklin, Frederick Douglass, and Gloria Anzaldúa. He also developed bilingual philosophy courses to foster linguistic and cultural pluralism, aligning with UTRGV's mission as a Hispanic-serving institution.
His research explores decolonial thought, bilingual education advocacy, and the intersections of ethics, social/political philosophy, and religion. Key contributions include analyzing Anzaldúa's philosophical genealogy and promoting community engagement through partnerships between universities and local families.
Stehn's work bridges philosophy and activism, advocating for inclusive education systems that honor Latinx cultural wealth. He collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on projects like 'Descolonización Democrática del Pensamiento' and strengthens ties between UTRGV's Center for Bilingual Studies and community organizations.
