Alexander V. Prishchepov is an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen's Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (Faculty of Science). His research specializes in Land System Science, examining land-use transitions, agricultural abandonment, and climate change impacts using remote sensing and spatial modeling. He coordinates the Global Land Abandonment Working Group and serves on the scientific steering board of the Global Land Programme.
Education includes:
- Ph.D. in Land-Use Modeling and Remote Sensing (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2010)
- GIS Certificate and International Studies (Oklahoma State University)
- Postdoctoral research in land use modeling (IAMO, Germany)
Research focuses on:
- Drivers and consequences of land-cover change
- Climate change vulnerability and adaptation in agricultural systems
- Remote sensing of human-environment interactions
- Eurasian agricultural transitions and food security
Publications emphasize farmland abandonment dynamics, climate-agriculture interactions, and geospatial analysis of environmental changes, with recent work exploring carbon sequestration potential of abandoned croplands and conflict-driven food insecurity.
Leads the 'Remote Sensing for Land System Studies' course and advises students in geospatial analysis and land change science. Coordinates international research collaborations through the Global Land Programme.
