Alexander Shapiro is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). He is affiliated with the CERE – Center for Energy Resources Engineering. His research focuses on enhanced oil recovery, diffusion processes, and carbon sequestration, with a strong emphasis on petroleum reservoir engineering and thermophoresis. He actively supervises multiple PhD projects, including studies on carbon dioxide sequestration, methane recovery from natural gas hydrates, and molecular diffusion in fractured reservoirs.
His research interests span key areas such as the dynamics of oil droplets in capillaries, diffusion coefficient modeling, and upscaling techniques for heterogeneous media. Recent work includes experimental studies on CO₂ storage in sandstone aquifers and population balance approaches for produced water treatment.
Shapiro has advised several PhD students, including W. Peeters (corrosion monitoring), R. T. Silitonga (biological CO₂ conversion), and Q. Ouyang (enhanced methane recovery via CO₂ replacement). His projects often involve interdisciplinary collaboration, addressing challenges in energy transition and sustainable resource management.
He is actively involved in academic activities, such as the Chemistry in the Oil Industry conference series, where he presented research findings on energy transition technologies.
