Alexander Schnegg

Dr. Alexander Schnegg is a Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion (MPI CEC) and an Adjunct Professor at Monash University. He holds a Dipl.-Phys from the Free University of Berlin (1998) and a Dr. rer. nat. in Physics from the same institution (1999–2003). His postdoctoral research included roles at the Max Planck Institute for Bioinorganic Chemistry (2004–2005) and the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (2006–2013). He has led the EPR Research Group at MPI CEC since 2018.

His research focuses on Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to study catalytically active transition metal ions, radicals, and energy conversion processes. Key areas include in-situ EPR for catalysis, high-spin transition metal ion states, and EPR-on-a-Chip (EPRoC) sensors. His work combines experimental and computational methods to understand catalytic mechanisms and material properties.

Dr. Schnegg’s group develops advanced EPR techniques, including THz-EPR and hyperfine spectroscopy, to characterize active sites in catalysts. Recent articles highlight studies on bismuthinidene chemistry, nitroxide radicals, and single-ion magnets. He advises PhD student Nikolai Kochetov and collaborates on projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The EPR Research Group at MPI CEC employs cutting-edge EPR methods to address challenges in energy conversion and storage, with a focus on paramagnetic states in catalytic systems.
