Dr. Alexander Schier is a Director and Professor at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, and serves as Site Director of the Allen Discovery Center for Cell Lineage (2017-present). He held leadership roles as Chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University (2014-2017) and maintains a Visiting Professor affiliation there (2019). His academic career spans prestigious institutions including NYU School of Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital.
- Ph.D. in Cell Biology (1988-1992), University of Basel
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Developmental Genetics at Harvard University (1992-1996)
Dr. Schier's research focuses on developmental genetics, particularly through zebrafish models, investigating morphogen gradients and mechanisms of embryogenesis. His work extends to non-coding RNAs, behavioral genetics, and the mapping of developmental lineages and trajectories.
As a leading academic, he serves on multiple scientific advisory boards including HHMI Scientific Review Board (2019-2022) and the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics (2019-2022). He has organized key conferences in developmental biology and held editorial roles at top journals including Annual Reviews of Cell and Developmental Biology and Science.
