Dr. Alexander Reid is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of York. He holds a BSc in Psychology from the University of Stirling (2003–2007), an MSc in Evolutionary Psychology from the University of Liverpool (2008–2009), and a PhD in Psychology from the University of York (2010–2014). His research focuses on sleep, dreaming, and memory consolidation, including the integration of new information with prior knowledge, children’s vocabulary acquisition, and emotional memory processing. He has contributed to studies on the 'dream-lag effect,' where recent events resurface in dreams 5–7 days later.
Teaching roles include modules such as Infancy, Academic Skills, and The Psychology of Consciousness. He supervises Year 3/MSci research projects and literature surveys. Reid is actively involved in departmental governance, serving on the Exceptional Circumstances Committee, as MSci Year Tutor, and Placement Year Coordinator. At the university level, he is the Forum Magazine Editor (2022–23) and a Faculty of Science Representative on the Library and Archives Committee.
His collaborations include Prof. Gareth Gaskell (York), Prof. Mark Blagrove (Swansea University), and Dr. Faye Smith (Newcastle University). He is affiliated with the Sleep Language and Memory Lab at York and the Swansea University Sleep Lab (SUSL). Awards include the John Lennon Memorial Scholarship and the George Butterworth Prize for Academic Attainment.
