Alexander Lerch is an Associate Dean of Research and Creative Practice and Associate Professor at the School of Music, Georgia Institute of Technology. He joined Georgia Tech in 2013 and teaches courses in music signal processing, computational music analysis, audio technology, and software engineering. Previously, he was Head of Research at zplane.development, a music technology licensing company.
His research focuses on Music Information Retrieval (MIR), blending signal processing, machine learning, music psychology, and systematic musicology. He leads the Music Informatics Group, developing AI-driven tools for music generation, production, and consumption. Lerch authored over 40 peer-reviewed papers and the textbook An Introduction to Audio Content Analysis, accompanied by open-source libraries like libACA and pyACA.
Recent work emphasizes generative models, source separation, and audio quality assessment. He actively contributes to conferences such as ISMIR and presents keynote lectures on AI in music and creative expression.
