Dr Alexander Laffer is a Lecturer in the School of Media and Film at the University of Winchester, specializing in Artificial Intelligence, Digital Media, and the ethics of emerging technologies. He joined the university in 2023 and teaches courses such as Media Theory and Big Data and Digital Cultures. Previously, he held roles as a Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh and the Emotional AI Lab at Bangor University, focusing on ethical AI implementation and public perception studies.
His research interests include the ethical implications of emotional AI, user awareness of technology, and integrating marginalized voices into tech debates. He is a Co-Investigator on the Responsible AI/UKRI-funded AEGIS project, developing ethical standards for AI systems. His interdisciplinary work spans media studies, linguistics, and creative practices, including digital design fiction exploring empathy in digital media.
Laffer holds an ESRC-funded PhD in Literary Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh, examining empathy, migration narratives, and reading groups. He has published widely on AI ethics, digital media, and discourse analysis, with notable contributions to Frontiers in Sociology, Surveillance & Society, and Poetics. He also has industry experience in publishing and research consulting for institutions like the Southbank Centre.
He leads research projects such as 'Automated Empathy – Globalising International Standards (AEGIS)' and 'Emotional AI in Cities,' supported by UKRI and the Economic and Social Research Council. His work emphasizes ethical technology design, civic engagement, and addressing biases in AI systems.
