Alexander Karasev

Alexander Karasev is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Entomology, Plant Pathology and Nematology at the University of Idaho. With a Ph.D. from Moscow State University, his research focuses on plant viruses affecting agricultural crops.

His work centers on potato virus Y (PVY), potato mop-top virus, and tobacco rattle virus, developing detection methods and management strategies. Karasev investigates virus recombination, strain prevalence, and resistance mechanisms in commercial potato varieties.

He teaches graduate seminars in plant sciences and supervises research on viral pathogenesis in crops. Karasev maintains extensive collaborations with agricultural research stations across the Pacific Northwest.
