Alexander Hulpke is Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics at Colorado State University. He is one of the principal authors of the computer algebra system GAP and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Computational Algebra.
His research focuses on algorithmic algebra, number theory, and discrete mathematics, particularly group theory and computer algebra/symbolic computation. He is actively involved in the development of concrete implementations for computational group theory.
Hulpke has made significant contributions to the field through numerous publications on computational group theory, including algorithms for subgroup calculation, conjugacy classes, and group representations. His work bridges theoretical mathematics with practical computational implementations.
- Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Computational Algebra
- Member of editorial boards for Journal of Symbolic Computation and Journal of Software for Algebra and Geometry
- Program Committee member for ISSAC conferences (2014, 2008, 2006)
He advises graduate students in computational group theory and teaches advanced courses including Computational Group Theory (M676). His work has positioned Colorado State University as a center for computational group theory research in the United States.
