Dr Alexander Howard is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of School (Education) at the University of Sydney's School of Literature, Art and Media. He holds a BA (Hons) and PhD from the University of Sussex, and a Master of Education from the University of Sydney. His academic roles include previous positions as Lecturer in English at the University of Sydney and Associate Lecturer in Modernism Studies at the University of New South Wales.
Dr Howard's research focuses on modernist, postmodernist, and contemporary literature/film, with intersections in critical theory. Current projects include Fictions of Austerity, A History of American Film Criticism, and studies on filmmaker Olivier Assayas. He has authored a monograph Charles Henri Ford: Between Modernism and Postmodernism (2017) and contributes to journals like Film-Philosophy and Modernism/Modernity.
- Teaching: Awarded 2019 Excellence in Teaching Award (Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences)
- Media Engagement: Regular contributor to The Conversation on literary and cultural topics, including analyses of contemporary films and political novels.
His advising includes PhD candidate Michael Chian's project on simulation technology's impact on cinema. Research interests span avant-garde movements, camp aesthetics, and the interplay of culture/politics.
