Alexander Harder is a Researcher at the Institute for European Ethnology within the Faculty of Philosophy at Humboldt University of Berlin, where he is also affiliated with the Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research (BIM). He is a member of the "Culture, Society and the Digital" laboratory and collaborates on projects like Circle-U 2023's "Grounding Crypto."
His educational background includes a MA in Gender Studies from Humboldt University (2014-2019), a study visit to UC San Diego (2012-2013), and a BA in Political Science from the Free University of Berlin (2010-2014).
Harder's research focuses on the anthropology of digital infrastructures, transformation of work and social reproduction, right-wing populism and racism, digital media publics, digitalization and geopolitics, and media theories. His current work examines how digital infrastructures reconfigure sovereignty and imagined communities, particularly through mobile communications and semiconductor production. He investigates how these "digital sovereignty" initiatives become commonplace and who the subjects of this sovereignty are.
His publication record shows a strong focus on digital truth-making, right-wing politics in social media, and the cultural aspects of political rejection. Recent work analyzes the European rightward shift, particularly how it manifests in everyday contexts and digital environments. His research often examines the intersection of digital technologies with political transformation and social acceptance.
Harder has co-taught seminars including "Code, Computation, Culture" (Winter 2022/23) with Bernd Kasparek, demonstrating his engagement with teaching alongside research responsibilities. His collaborative approach is evident in multiple co-authored publications with researchers like Benjamin Opratko and Manuela Bojadžijev.
