Alexander J. Field is the Michel and Mary Orradre Professor of Economics at Santa Clara University's Leavey School of Business. His career spans five decades, focusing on economic history, productivity analysis, and behavioral economics. He has held leadership roles including department chair (1988-1993, 2013-14) and served on the University's Board of Trustees (1988-91).

His research emphasizes the interplay between institutions, technological change, and productivity, with seminal work on the Great Depression, WWII mobilization, and interwar economic growth. He pioneered the analysis of total factor productivity (TFP) and challenged conventional narratives about wartime economic benefits.
Recent publications examine WWII's negative supply-side effects, housing cycles, and financial crises. His 2011 book A Great Leap Forward won multiple awards, including the Alice Hanson Jones Book Award.
