Prof. Dr. Alexander Enk is the Medical Director of the Dermatology Clinic and leads the Skin Tumor Center at Heidelberg University Hospital. He holds a C4 professorship in Dermatology and Venerology. His academic career includes roles as Chairman of the Transregional Collaborative Research Center (SFB/TRR 156) and leadership in international dermatological societies such as the European Society for Dermatological Research (ESDR) and the International Society for Investigative Dermatology (ISID). He has authored numerous studies on autoimmune skin diseases, immunotherapy, and skin cancer.
Education: Dr. Enk earned his medical degree from the University of Münster (1988) and completed postdoctoral training at NIH (USA). He was habilitated in Dermatology at the University of Mainz (1994).
Research focuses on immune mechanisms in skin diseases, including bullous pemphigoid, contact dermatitis, and melanoma. He pioneered studies on DEC205 antigen presentation pathways and adenosine-mediated immunosuppression. Recent work explores high-dose IVIG therapy for autoimmune conditions and AI-driven diagnostic tools in dermatology.
Leadership: He has held executive roles in the German Dermatological Society (DDG), Leopoldina Academy, and multiple DFG-funded research consortia. His awards include the Herbert Herxheimer Prize and recognition as an honorary member of leading dermatological societies globally.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Dermatology Clinic's translational research program and chairs the SFB/TRR 156 consortium investigating skin-immune interactions. Collaborates internationally on clinical trials for novel immunotherapies.
