Alexander Dekhtyar

Alexander Dekhtyar is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly). He serves as the CENG Coordinator for the Cross-Disciplinary Studies Minor in Data Science. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland (2000) and earlier degrees from Tver State University in Russia and the University of Alabama. Dekhtyar specializes in database systems, data mining, and knowledge discovery, teaching courses such as Knowledge Discovery in Data (CSC 466), Database Design, and Data Science Capstone projects.

His research interests span uncertain reasoning, XML data management, bioinformatics algorithms, and modern database architectures. He has led projects like the Center of Excellence in Traceability and contributed to collaborative filtering and graph mining methodologies. Dekhtyar actively engages in course development, advising, and service roles, including past leadership as a graduate program coordinator.
