Alexander Brandt is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University. His research focuses on systems, particularly improving the performance, quality, and usability of software for scientific and data-intensive computing on local hardware such as workstations and small clusters.
His research interests include high-performance computing, parallel and heterogeneous computing, software performance engineering, symbolic and scientific computation, and software engineering tailored for scientific and mathematical applications. He emphasizes a hardware-centric approach to software optimization, enabling scientists and mathematicians to effectively utilize current computing resources without relying on future hardware advancements.
Alex's work integrates parallel algorithms, heterogeneous computing, software engineering, and UI/UX design to develop tools that empower end-users in domains such as simulation, gaming, graphics, physics, and astronomy. His goal is to enhance both the capability and accessibility of high-performance software.
He completed his PhD at the University of Western Ontario in 2022, an MSc from the same institution in 2018, and a BSc from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2017.
