Professor Alexander Bazilevskiy is a Visiting Scientist at the Department of Earth Sciences, Institute of Geological Sciences, Planetary Sciences and Remote Sensing at Freie Universität Berlin. He maintains a primary affiliation with the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, where he serves as a leading planetary scientist. As an HRSC Co-Investigator, he contributes to high-resolution stereo camera operations for planetary missions.
His research spans multiple planetary bodies with particular emphasis on Venus, the Moon, and Mars. Bazilevskiy's work focuses on impact cratering processes, planetary surface evolution, and the geological interpretation of remote sensing data. He has made significant contributions to understanding Venus surface features through analysis of Venera mission data and has been instrumental in Soviet/Russian lunar exploration programs including Luna missions.
Bazilevskiy's publication record demonstrates consistent research productivity spanning over four decades, with recent work focusing on lunar crater morphology, comet nucleus structure (particularly 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko from Rosetta mission data), and Mars surface processes. His research shows a transition from early Venus-focused work to broader planetary applications while maintaining expertise in impact crater studies across multiple celestial bodies.
As a collaborator on numerous international projects, Bazilevskiy has worked with NASA, ESA, and other space agencies. His current research includes analysis of data from the Mars Express mission, Rosetta comet mission, and planning for future Russian lunar missions including Luna Glob/Resource missions where he participates in landing site selection and characterization.
