Dr. Alexa Scarlata is a Lecturer in Digital Communication at RMIT University, based at City Campus, Australia. She holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne (2022), focusing on the impact of online TV on Australian drama production (2015–2020). Her research explores internet-distributed television, content production, and national screen policy, with a focus on platform ecosystems and cultural policy dynamics.
Dr. Scarlata has contributed to major research projects, including the Australian Research Council Discovery Project on 'Internet-Distributed Television: Cultural, Industrial and Policy Dynamics' (2019–2022) and the ARC Future Fellowship Project 'Television in the platform ecosystem' (2020–2024). These projects examined SVOD platforms' impact on national industries, consumer responses, and policy development.
Her research interests span cultural studies, digital media, communication studies, and policy analysis. She currently serves as Reviews Editor for the Journal of Digital Media and Policy and has held roles as a sessional tutor/guest lecturer in TV and Screen Culture at RMIT and as a course convenor/sessional tutor at Swinburne University. She was awarded the CHOICE/ADM+S Consumer Advocacy Placement in 2022.
Dr. Scarlata’s work bridges academic research and industry practice, addressing contemporary challenges in media distribution, audience behavior, and policy frameworks.
