Associate Professor Alex Wong specializes in evolutionary genetics and microbiology at Carleton University's Department of Biology within the Faculty of Science. His research focuses on the genetics of adaptation, particularly the consequences of genetic interactions (epistasis) and non-adaptive outcomes of natural selection. He employs experimental evolution, genomics, and bioinformatics approaches, with a strong emphasis on antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and microbial pathogen dynamics.
Education: B.A. and M.A. from Carleton University, Ph.D. from Cornell University. His lab is located in the Nesbitt Building and collaborates on projects involving environmental pathogen surveillance and bacterial genome analysis.
Research interests span microbial evolution, including studies on Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and SARS-CoV-2. Recent work explores environmental detection methods for pathogens in hospitals, schools, and food systems. Key contributions include COMPASS sequence simulation tools and insights into fitness costs of antibiotic resistance mutations.
