Alex Street is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Carroll College, Helena. His academic career spans institutions in the US, Italy, and Germany, with previous postdoctoral research at the MPI-MMG.
Dr. Street's educational background includes:
- BA from the University of Oxford
- MA in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley (2006)
- PhD in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley (December 2011)
Dr. Street's research focuses on Comparative and American politics, with particular emphasis on political participation. His work explores how immigrants naturalize, how voters choose between candidates, how immigrants develop political party preferences, and how voter registration laws affect turnout. His dissertation, "Citizenship Begins at Home: How Families Shape Immigrant Incorporation," was honored for its contributions to the field.
Dr. Street has conducted comparative research between German cities and regions to understand how contemporary democracies manage social diversity resulting from immigration. He has worked on several completed projects including:
- Immigration and political socialization (with Michael Jones-Correa and Chris Zepeda-Millán)
- Political institutions and the challenge of diversity (with Karen Schönwälder, Cihan Sinanoglu, and Daniel Volkert)
- Voters and representatives: how does immigrant background matter? (with Karen Schönwälder)
Dr. Street has served as an expert witness in court cases on voting rights across several states. Since 2014, students in his Elections class have conducted the Carroll College Exit Poll every other year to understand voter priorities in Montana.
His professional experience extends beyond traditional academia, having taught as a volunteer in prisons in California and New York.
